AI is advancing rapidly in prediction—forecasting demand, generating text, anticipating behavior. The gains are real. But the framing is incomplete.
Prediction works best in stable, well-behaved systems—where the future resembles the past. Many of the systems we care about today are not like that. Organizations, markets, and geopolitical environments are path-dependent, adaptive, and shaped by the path they take.
In such systems, prediction has limits.
What matters instead is navigation.
Navigation is iterative. It proceeds through probing, feedback, and adjustment. It does not assume that the underlying conditions are fixed or even knowable. It accepts that actions change the system itself.
This distinction is not semantic—it is operational. Prediction asks: *What will happen?* Navigation asks: *What do we do next, given what just happened?*
AI is already reshaping how we predict. The larger opportunity—and challenge—is how it might support navigation in complex, evolving environments.
If the real question is not just what AI can do, but how we should think and act within systems that are constantly changing, then this is a conversation worth continuing.
